Phoenix and Azul Settle for 1-1 Stalemate

CFC Azul sub Justin Brewer scored the first goal of the game in the 83rd minute, but it wasn’t enough as Nano Short scored the equalizer in stoppage time to salvage a 1-1 draw for GPS Portland Phoenix.

Brewer beat Phoenix goalie Terrence Dieterich with less than ten minutes to go in regulation on an assist from former Revolution midfielder/forward Ryan Kinne.

But in extra time, Phoenix’s constant barrage of shooting finally paid off. Despite having 11 shots, Azul keeper Matthew Sangeloty only made three saves. Short beat Sangeloty from a pass from Joel Theissen for the tying goal four minutes into stoppage time.

CFC Azul will now host Boston Victory on Friday, May 25th at 7:00 p.m. while the Phoenix’s next game won’t be until a Jun. 2 rematch with the Azul at 7:30 at Tunxis Mead Park.
