Football at Fenway on ESPN2

BOSTON, Mass. – Fenway Park will be featured on national television on ESPN2 on Wednesday, July 25th, and for once, it’s not for a Boston Red Sox game. Instead, the now annual Football at Fenway event – this year featuring England’s Liverpool F.C. and Italy’s AS Roma – will be shown live nationally on ESPN2.

With the game already sold out and the average ticket for resale coming in at $110 according to SeatGeek, ESPN2 might be the best bet for soccer fans that currently don’t have a ticket to catch the match. And for fans of U.S. Soccer or the New England Revolution, it could be a match of particular interested.

Roma should feature U.S. International midfielder Michael Bradley, who appears set to sign for the club. But more exciting for local soccer fans is the possibility of seeing former New England Revolution midfielder and U.S. star Clint Dempsey if he quickly completes his reported move to Liverpool.

Liverpool F.C., like the Red Sox and Fenway Park, are owned by the Fenway Sports Group. Boston native Thomas DiBenedetto, President of AS Roma, is also a partner in Fenway Sports Group.

Both clubs are coming off somewhat disappointing seasons with Liverpool finishing 8th in the English Premier League, though they did capture the League Cup, and Roma finishing 7th in the Italian Serie A. Liverpool has had more success in Europe than any other Premier League club, winning 5 UEFA Champions League titles, but only qualified for the Europa League next season. Roma, a former Champions League finalist, missed out on European competition entirely.

Liverpool’s squad is highlighted by captain and England star Steven Gerrard and Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez. Roma features legendary Italian forward Francesco Totti and Italian National Team star Daniele De Rossi.

The match at Fenway Park kicks off on July 25th at 6:30 p.m. live on ESPN2. Liverpool’s July 28th match against Tottenham Hotspur at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore at 1 p.m. will also air on ESPN2.
