Mutiny Eliminated From Playoffs After 3-3 Draw

A 90th minute Ashley Spivey equalizer ended the Mutiny’s playoff hopes in the wake of Wednesday’s 3-3 draw between the East Longmeadow-based 11 and the Chesapeake Charge.

The Mutiny came into the midweek match at Millersville, Md. needing maximum points to keep their playoff hopes alive. And with Saturday’s upset win over the Breakers fresh in their minds, they had every reason to believe they could do it.

It started off well enough for the Mutiny, with Kate Howarth scoring in just the fifth minute. Howarth doubled her tally in the 35th minute, heading in a cross from Kacey Richards to cushion the lead.

But in the 40th minute, the Charge responded when Cheyenne Skidmore scored the first goal of the game for the hosts. The Charge carried the momentum of Skidmore’s strike into the second half, where Skidmore set up Nicole Clark for the equalizer just three minutes into the second half.

With the game knotted at two in the 64th minute, the Mutiny took advantage of a Chesapeake miscue in the midfield, where Richards sprung Tiffany Weimer, who put the ball into the back of the net to restore the Mutiny lead.

But in the 90th minute, the Charge struck one last time. Skidmore sent a free kick  into the area that Spivey pounced on to level it and shut the door on New England’s playoff ambitions.

The Mutiny return to action on Jul. 19 at 7pm when they face the Chicago Red Stars at East Longmeadow High School.
