Twellman announces his retirement

(UPDATED) Taylor Twellman, the Revolution’s all-time leading goalscorer with 101 career goals to his credit, announced his retirement for professional soccer at a press conference this afternoon.

Twellman, who suffered a number of concussions during his playing career, last suited up for New England on June 7, 2009, a game in which he scored goals number 100 and 101 against the New York Red Bulls. But, after a relapse of his post-concussion symptoms following the game, he would not appear in another MLS match.

It’s fair to say that Twellman, who has been the face of the franchise for better part of the past decade, will end his career as one of the deadliest strikers to ever play in MLS.

He is the only player in MLS history to record 100 goals before his 30th birthday, and currently stands in the five spot in the total career goals scored in the league. His 10 playoff goals are sixth all-time. Twellman was named an MLS All-Star five times during his career (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 & 2007), Best XI twice (2002 & 2005), and won MLS MVP and Golden Boot in 2005. Twellman also scored 6 goals in 29 appearances for the U.S. National Team.
