Breakers to Field Academy Team in WPSL

Player development has been the name of the game for the Boston Breakers as they enter their first season in NWSL.

On Wednesday, the organization reinforced that idea with establishment of the Boston Breakers College Academy team, which will play a 10-game season in Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in 2013. Like their NWSL counterpart, the Academy team will play its home games at Dilboy Stadium.

“The College Academy program is a natural fit for our organization,” Boston Breakers General Manager Lee Billiard said in a statement. “The program will allow college players to practice and compete in a high-level environment during their summer offseasons. The team is an extension of our brand, and the roster has a lot of quality to it from a lot of top collegiate programs.”

The Academy team will kick off its season at home on May 29 against the New England Mutiny at 7:30pm.

Among the players set for the club’s inaugural season: Boston College forward Stephanie McCaffrey, Boston College midfielder Patrice Vettori, and Boston University midfielders Kylie Strom and Megan McGoldrick. They will be guided by head coach John Doherty and assistant Andrew Coppola.

“I am very excited to have an opportunity to work with such a talented group of athletes,” Doherty said in a statement. “The aim of the program is to continue the development of these players throughout the summer and to provide a professional, structured, and challenging environment for them to work in. Our role is to make sure the players are all prepared and ready for the season ahead with an emphasis on development.”

Meanwhile, McCaffrey, who scored 10 goals and added seven assists in an Eagles uniform last season, is also looking forward to being a part of the endeavor.

“I am thrilled to be a part of the new Breakers College Academy team,” McCaffrey said in a statement. “I am lucky to have such a competitive option so close to home and to have the chance to play in the WPSL. It’s going to be a great summer, and I couldn’t be more excited to start the season.”
