Breakers Fall to Sky Blue, Winless Streak at 4

The Boston Breakers winless streak went to four straight after falling 3-2 to first place Sky Blue FC on Sunday at Dilboy Stadium

Lisa DeVanna (9′), Monica Ocampo (26′) and Katy Freels-Frierson (71′) all scored for Sky Blue, while Joanna Lohman (61′) and Kyah Simon (90+5′) countered for the hosts.

The loss pushed the Breakers record to 3-4-3 (12 points) while Sky Blue upped their mark to 8-2-1 (25 points).

“They’re leading the league, and there’s good reasons why they’re leading the league. I felt like we created chances, but … our finishing needs to improve,” Boston Breakers head coach Lisa Cole said in a team release. “Chances were there for us. We just weren’t good enough today.”

Sky Blue opened the scoring in the ninth minute when DeVanna curled a shot around goalkeeper Ashley Phillips off a pass from Monica Ocampo. In the 26th minute, Ocampo the doubled the lead with a goal of her own, finishing a pass from Freels-Frierson past Phillips.

The Breakers came close to cutting the lead before the interval when Katie Schoepfer ripped a shot that nearly found the back of the net before Sky Blue defender Coco Goodson punched it away in the 44th minute.

Boston finally broke through in the 60th minute via Lohman, who headed a cross from the left flank by Julie King past Brittany Cameron for her second goal of the season.

Sky Blue responded in kind ten minutes later when Freels put away a chance of her own as she fired past Alyssa Naeher, who came on at halftime for her season debut for Phillips.

Simon grabbed one back for the hosts five minutes into stoppage time, but any hopes of an equalizer faded when the final whistle blew moments later.

The Breakers will try to snap their winless streak on Jun. 26 when they host Seattle Reign FC at Dilboy Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7pm.
