WPSL: Mutiny Blast Breakers’ Academy 5-0

In a matchup of unbeatens, it was all New England Mutiny in their 5-0 win over the Boston Breakers Academy on Saturday at East Longmeadow High School.

Alyssa Martino (3′) opened the scoring, while Andrea Plucenik (47′), Shauna Edwards (58′), Tori Sousa (80′) and Meimi Tomochika (82′) all piled it on their opponent. Niki Deiter made seven saves to pick up the clean sheet.

With the win, the Mutiny upped their record to 4-0-3 (15 points) while the Breakers Academy dropped their first loss of the season to send them to a 5-1-1 (16 points) mark.

“The back four did a great job again for us tonight,” said Mutiny head coach Roy Gurnon in a team release. “After the first half, the rest of our team really had a sense of urgency and that got us this big win.”

The Mutiny raced to the board moments after the opening whistle when Rachel Ugolik sent a pass from outside the box to Martino, who slotted it through to put the hosts up in the third minute.

Despite the early goal, the Mutiny had to wait until the second half to make the Breakers Academy a spec in the rearview.

Two minutes into the second half, Edwards put a through ball to Plucenik, who sent her shot under the dive of Emma Nichols to widen the margin.

Edwards found the scoresheet 11 minutes later when she grabbed a pass from Ugolik to make it a three-goal gap.

The gap became a canyon in the final 10 minutes when Sousa converted a Kacey Richards pass in the 80th minute, while Tomochika tallied in the 82nd minute from a Lauren Reilly ball.

The Mutiny return to action on Saturday, Jun. 29 when they face Boston Aztec at North Reading High School at 1pm. The Breakers Academy will be back on the pitch on Saturday, Jun. 29 to square off against CFC Azul at Central Connecticut State University at 5:30pm.
