PDL: Alencar Wins POTW Honors, Sousa Scores in Fury Debut

A pair of New England-based PDL players had the spotlight cast on them this week, thanks to their impressive form in league action.

On Thursday, The United Soccer Leagues (USL) announced that Western Mass Pioneers forward Alencar Junior was named PDL Player of the Week for the eighth week of the season.

Junior punched in a two-goal effort in a 2-1 win over the Vermont Voltage last Friday, a performance that came only two days after he scored three in a 4-1 win against Real Boston Rams on Jun. 19. Since joining the Pioneers on Jun. 14, the former Worcester Hydra striker – who scored 10 goals in PDL last season – has collected five tallies in three games.

North of the border, former Rams and Revolution midfielder Andrew Sousa scored in his debut with the Ottawa Fury in a 5-0 victory over the Vermont Voltage on Wednesday. The Fall River, Mass. native came on in the 61st minute, and scored 84th minute when he converted a Carl Howarth free kick.

Prior joining the Fury, Sousa scored two goals in six games for the Rams, and played in the team’s charity match versus his former MLS side, the Revolution, on Jun. 18 in New Britain, Conn.
