Less than a year after playing in front of 62,310 fans at Gillette Stadium, Portugal’s National Team is tentatively set to return to New England for a pre-World Cup friendly against Mexico on Jun. 6.

According to a report on ESPN FC, El Tri is “95 percent” certain to complete a deal that would pit them against Portugal in Boston prior to the World Cup, said Mexico federation president Justino Compean on Tuesday.

“We are trying to set up matches with qualified teams,” Compean said during a media conference Tuesday. He advised that the potential clash against Portugal was still pending confirmation, and did not specify where the match would potentially take place.

Last September, Portugal squared off against Brazil in a friendly at Gillette Stadium, a game which the Canaries won 3-1. Ballon D’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo was scheduled to feature for Portugal, but was called back to Real Madrid prior to the friendly. The Sept. 10, 2013 friendly marked the first time that Portugal had played in New England in over 20 years.

Mexico last played in the area in 2007, when they, too, played Brazil and suffered a 3-1 loss to a side that featured Kaka, Ronaldinho and Alexander Pato.
