The New England Revolution took another step toward finalizing its First Kick roster on Thursday by signing 2014 draft pick Alec Sundly to a new deal.

Sundly, who was selected 31st overall (2nd round) during January’s SuperDraft, joined camp as an unsigned pick. The 21-year-old holding midfielder has featured in each of the Revolution’s six preseason games to date.

“When we drafted Alec in the second round of the draft, we felt like we had a little bit of a steal there,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns said in a statement on Thursday. “He’s been a nice addition to camp and will provide us with some depth and versatility in the midfield this season.”

Sundly was drafted out of the University of California, where he played in 73 career games for the Bears. He scored 13 goals and added three assists during his four seasons at Cal, where he was a teammate of current Revolution center back A.J. Soares in 2010.

The 6-0, 157 lbs. midfielder was invited to the 2014 MLS Combine, but did not participate due to illness.

He is one of three holding midfielders on the roster, along with Andy Dorman and Scott Caldwell. The rookie midfielder is a likely candidate for a loan to the Revolution’s USL-PRO affiliate in Rochester once its starts its season in April.

Sundly will wear number 19 after sporting the 44 jersey – a numeral often reserved for trialists – this preseason.
