#TBT: Goals by Gonsalves and Nilsen Give Fall River 2-1 Victory over Hakoahs (5/27/1930)

JR-BG1

NEW YORK – Billy Gonsalves and Scotty Nilsen both scored, while Johnny Reder stopped a penalty to steer the Fall River Marksmen to a 2-1 Lewis Cup win over the Hakoah All-Stars at the Polo Grounds on Tuesday.

A crowd of 4,000 witnessed Tuesday’s game, which featured plenty of action on both end of the pitch. Gonsalves scored in the fourth minute, while Siegfried Wortman equalized before the break. But Nilsen put the Marksmen ahead for good when he tallied in the second half.

Fall River owner Sam Marks attempted to secure the second game of the Lewis Cup series at his stadium in Tiverton, R.I., on Wednesday, but was unsuccessful in doing so. Thus, the Polo Grounds will once again host the sides for the second game.

Gonsalves Scores Early

Fall River secured the first strike inside of four minutes when Gonsalves uncorked a shot that lodged itself into the back of the net. The 20-yard blast left Hakoah keeper Lajos Fischer helpless as it careened past his outstretched hands.

The Hakoahs had a chance to level the match not long after when referee McCabe pointed to the spot following a handball inside the box by Bob MacAulay. Josef Gruenfeld stepped up to take the kick, but Reder got just enough of it to keep it from spinning into the back of the net.

Despite missing that chance, the Hakoahs later found the equalizer when Wortman tallied before the interval.

But Fall River would have the last laugh. White crossed for Nilsen inside the area, where the Fall River center forward pushed it through for the game-winner in the second half.

Hakoah’s chances of finding another equalizer were significantly weakened due to the losses of Erno Schwartz, who hurt his leg in the first half, and Paul Mahrer, who picked up a knock early in the second half.

The Fall River players will remain in the city tonight, and prepare for Wednesday’s second game. Later that day, they’ll travel by train back home in preparation of Friday’s match against Glasgow Rangers in New Bedford. The lineups:
