A sound first half performance by the Boston Breakers wasn’t enough to put an end their recent struggles as FC Kansas City staked a 2-0 win at Harvard Stadium on Sunday.

After a scoreless first frame, Nikki Phillips broke through in the 62nd minute, while former Breaker Amy Rodriguez padded the lead in the 82nd minute. Nicole Barnhart collected four save to earn the clean sheet.

The 2-0 defeat extended the Breakers’ losing streak to four, and dropped their record to 1-6-0 (3 points). Kansas City’s victory moved them into third place with a 4-3-3 (15 points) record.

Boston started the match strong, and nearly got on the board in the 28th minute. Julie King grabbed a pass and sent through on a header, but the service came after the ball had crossed the endline, thus nullifying the goal.

The guests made its first bid in right before halftime when Frances Silva found Lauren Holiday in the box, but the subsequent shot was snuffed out by Alyssa Naeher.

But Naeher couldn’t keep Kansas City from finding the back of the net just after the hour. Holiday sent a corner far post for Phillips, who tapped it through to put her club on top.

The Breakers looked for a response, but in the midst of that search, the Blues grabbed another in the closing minutes. Holiday once again found Jen Buczkowski out on the right, where she crossed it for Rodriguez in the box. The former Breakers forward fired away to give Kansas City a comfortable lead late.

Boston will attempt to put the breaks on their losing streak on Wednesday at 7:30pm when they host the Portland Thorns at Harvard Stadium.
