A Sonia Bermudez stoppage time goal sank the Boston Breakers, who succumbed to the Western New York Flash 4-3 on Sunday at Harvard Stadium.

Bermudez tapped through a Samantha Kerr pass at the far post to break a three-all score moments before the final whistle. Teammate Abby Wamback opened the scoring in the eighth minute, then added another in the 49th minute. Kerr added one of her own in the 66th minute.

Prior to Bermudez’s game-winner, the Breakers countered with goals from Kristie Mewis, who tallied in the 29th and 76th minutes, while Jazmine Reeves scribbled her name on the scoresheet in the 74th minute.

The loss doomed Boston (4-14-2, 14 points) to their fourth loss in their last five, while the Flash (8-11-3, 27 points) ended a four-game winless streak in the process.

For the second straight game, the Breakers conceded the opening goal, this time inside of eight minutes. Wambach pounced on a mistake in the rear and slotted it through to put the guests ahead early.

Mewis leveled it near the hour mark, while keeper Alyssa Naeher was called upon to make a big save on a Carli Lloyd penalty in the 31st minute. The penalty call came after Kerr was pulled down inside the area by a Breakers defender.

The match remained level going into the break, but it didn’t stay that way for long in the second half. Wambach etched her name into the match report by chipping a shot that fell inside the far post in the 49th minute. Kerr made it a two-goal game in the 66th minute when she headed through a cross from Lloyd.

But the Breakers were far from done. Reeves brought one back for the hosts eight minutes later, while Mewis secured another equalizer in the 76th minute.

Any visions the hosts harbored of getting the result vanished into the cool Cambridge air when Burmudez slotted through the game-winner on a beautiful cross from Kerr on the right flank.

The Breakers return to action Wednesday when they’ll face FC Kansas City at Durwood Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm ET.
