Report: Liverpool interested in Dempsey

According to published reports, Liverpool FC are interested in acquiring former New England Revolution midfielder Clint Dempsey as part of a deal that would send former Fulham defender Paul Konchesky back to Craven Cottage in exchange.

Dempsey, who was drafted 8th overall in the 2004 MLS Superdraft by the New England Revolution, has earned a reputation as one of the most dangerous and creative midfielders in the English Premier League since joining the Cottagers in 2007 for a reported fee of $4 million.  In 2009, La Gazzetta dello Sport (Italy) named Dempsey as of one of the top 11 English Premier League players of the season while his goal against Juventus in last year’s Europa League is being touted by many as Fulham’s best goal in history.

Konchesky, who made 97 appearances for Fulham between 2007 and 2010, has not been the stalwart defender Liverpool expected him to be when they signed him to 4-year contract worth £3-£4 million over the summer.  In fact, the former Cottager has made just 15 league appearances for Liverpool this season and has hardly helped mend the porous defense which has allowed 31 goals this season.

Should Liverpool find a way to secure Dempsey’s services, they will have added a proven Premier League midfielder known for his dynamic play and creativity on the ball.  Dempsey has tallied six goals so far this season and has scored 19 goals in 68 matches for the USA in international play.
