Nicol: Lampard’s Extended Stay w/ Man. City a ‘Disaster’

Former Revolution boss Steve Nicol criticized Manchester City’s decision to extend Frank Lampard’s stay in the EPL on Wednesday, one which he feels damages both the reputation of New York City FC and MLS as a whole.
Nicol, who spent nearly two decades in the EPL during the 1980s and 1990s, gave his point of view on the move during a recent episode of ESPN FC.
“It’s a disaster, an absolute disaster for that new franchise, a disaster for MLS,” Nicol said ESPNFC. “I can’t wait to hear (Commissioner) Don Garber.”
Lampard was originally supposed to join the expansion side on Jan. 1, but had his loan with Manchester City – one of the primary backers of the New York-based outfit – extended through the end of the EPL season. He is now expected to begin his tenure with the MLS side in June.
In a club statement on Tuesday, NYC FC director of football Claudio Reyna tried to alleviate any concerns surrounding the decision.
“Frank is a star and it is no surprise that Manchester City is rewarded by his contributions on the field every single day,” Reyna said. “He is eager to get to New York once his commitment ends in England and will be available to play on arrival as a permanent member of the squad given he will come to us having played at the highest level.”
Nicol’s response: “What a lovely spin. I couldn’t say it better myself.”
Lampard was supposed to be a part of the squad that opens its season on Mar. 15 against the Revolution at Yankee Stadium. Instead, it appears his arrival will have to wait until the summer.
“This does not send out a very good signal,” Nicol said.
