The Boston Breakers bolstered their midfield on Monday by signing Stephanie Verdoia ahead of its season opener against the Portland Thorns on Saturday.

Verdoia, who was selected by the Breakers in the fourth round of the 2015 NWSL College Draft, was the club’s preseason assist leader (3), and played in all four preseason matches.

“She’s a very good, young talent and is super composed. She’s wise beyond her years,” Boston Breakers head coach Tom Durkin said in a club release on Monday. “She shows a lot of promise and poise, and she had a really good start. She really picked it up toward the tail end of the Florida trip.”

Prior to her selection in January’s NWSL draft, the 22-year-old midfielder was a two-time Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year at Seattle University. She finished her college career as the school’s all-time leader in goals (51) and points (132), and set the Redhawks’ single-season scoring record in 2014 with 22 goals, which also placed her second in the nation in Division 1 college soccer.

“I’ve always wanted to play professional soccer, but I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to because there are so many good players in this league and in this country,” Verdoia said in a club release. “I think the Breakers have a really talented team, so being given the opportunity to play with these girls and be a part of this organization is mind-blowing.

“I’m really grateful for everyone I’ve met along the way that has helped me get here. I’m really excited to be here and to get better and learn.”
