Not long after he received a “very nice” e-mail from U.S. Soccer about his call up for the squad’s friendly against Mexico, Juan Agudelo said he wanted to do all he could to stay in the national team pool. It’s safe to say he did just that on Wednesday.

Agudelo, who came on for Jordan Morris in the 65th minute, scored seven minutes later to help seal a 2-0 win for the United States at the Alamodome. The 22-year-old brought down a ball from Michael Bradley with a deft touch, eluded his defender, then blasted it through the grasp of goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo.

Immediately after the blast, an emotional Agudelo pulled his collar over his face as if he was shedding tears of joy and pointed to the sky as he celebrated the goal.

For Agudelo, it was his first National Team goal since Mar. 26, 2011 in a match against Argentina, and the third of his National Team career. Additionally, Wednesday’s match allowed the Revolution forward to get his first National Team cap since Mar. 14, 2014 against Ukraine.

Agudelo and Lee Nguyen, who did not see action in Wednesday’s match, are expected to return to rejoin the Revolution in Foxborough on Thursday. New England will face the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park on Sunday.
