Report: Revs Won’t Pursue Packwood

It turns out former Birmingham City defender and Concord, Mass. native Will Packwood won’t be joining the Revolution after all.

According to a tweet from Fox Soccer’s Kyle McCarthy on Monday, Revolution general manager Michael Burns confirmed that the team won’t be signing the 21-year-old central defender.

Packwood joined the Revolution on trial last week following the end of his tenure with Championship side Birmingham City. He originally joined Birmingham City’s academy at age 14.

After a series of injury-plagued seasons, Packwood requested that the English club terminate his contract. That request was honored, and thus, Packwood became a free agent with the intention of joining an MLS side.

Packwood was not included in the allocation ranking list issued on May 1, indicating that an MLS club holds his discovery rights. In a May 6 ESPNFC.com report, Packwood acknowledged that he did not know which MLS club held those rights.

The young defender, who’s also suited up for the U.S. U-23s and U-20s, joined the Birmingham City Academy as a 14-year-old in 2007. Over the last few seasons, he’s had loan spells at League Two clubs Bristol Rovers and Cheltenham Town and League One club Colchester United.

The Revolution currently have only three natural center backs on the active roster (Jose Goncalves, Andrew Farrell, and London Woodberry), though one of them – Woodberry – has been converted to right back.
