Revs wave goodbye to three

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – For draft picks Fernando Cabadas and Steven Perry and second year player Roberto Linck, hopes of earning a contract with the New England Revolution for 2011 have come to an end. All three players were released from the Revs’ preseason camp prior to Monday’s training session.

Cabadas, Perry and Linck all saw limited minutes during the team’s preseason matches in Orlando last week, but did not make enough of an impression with the coaching staff to earn a contract with the team.

Cabadas, a central midfielder during his time at Sacramento State who scored his first collegiate goal on an impressive bicycle kick, was an unused substitute against the University of Central Florida and against FC Dallas, but played the entire first half against a team of U.S. U-17s. Playing out of position at left midfield, Cabadas set up Perry for a 30th minute chance in that game and saw a shot of his own denied by the ‘keeper ten minutes later.

However, the Supplemental Draft pick failed to do enough to earn an extended look from Revs head coach Steve Nicol.

Also departing the team is Perry, a striker out of the University of Notre Dame. Perry, similarly, only saw action in the first half of the Revs game against the U.S. U-17s. He nearly made an immediate impact, but sent a volley just 30 seconds into the match over the net. After getting on the receiving end of Cabadas’ header later in the match, his effort beat the goalkeeper, but was cleared off the line by a defender.

Perry was taken by the Revs in the MLS SuperDraft with the third pick of the third round (39thoverall). He was among several strikers in camp hoping to fill the void left after the retirement of Taylor Twellman.

Linck, who joined the Revs on July 30thof last year, was capable of playing as both a left and right midfielder. He saw time as a late substitute in two regular season games and also showed some promise after entering as an attacking substitute for the Revs with 20 minutes remaining in the SuperLiga Final. That appearance on September 1st would be his last, as injuries hampered him the rest of the season.

The Brazilian-born Linck attended Irvine Valley College and played professionally in Romania and played indoor soccer with the Chicago Storm. He saw time against both UCF and the U.S. U-17s during the Revs stay in Orlando.

With the departure of Linck, Cabadas, and Perry, the Revs are left with 25 players in camp, including five still unsigned. Second year midfielder Zak Boggs and goalkeeper Tim Murray are joined by rookie forwards Ryan Kinne and Alan Koger and midfielder Andrew Sousa as the players still hoping to earn a contract. The Revs can carry up to 30 players on their roster this season.
