ASL: Late Goals Seal Win for Western Mass

After trading chances with their adversaries for 70 minutes, Western Mass Pro Soccer finally broke through on the back of a late Luke Perry goal to secure a 2-0 win over the Rhode Island Oceaneers on Sunday at Lusitano Stadium.
Perry scored in the 70th minute when he pounced on poor outlet pass from keeper Chris Moura and buried it to put the Lusitanos ahead. The hosts added to their lead in the 90th minute when Maxi Vieira sent a pass for David Bernhardsson, who deposited his shot into the back of the net.
The Oceaneers finished with 10 men after Phil Tower was issued his second caution and subsequent dismissal in the 79th minute.
Western Mass keeper Jose Silva made six saves to record the clean sheet, despite the rainy conditions in Ludlow, Mass. Oceaneers midfielder Andrew Sousa fired a team-high four shots in a losing effort.
With the win, Western Mass improved its record to 8-1-5 (29 points) and returned to the top of the ASL table. The loss put the Oceaneers’ mark at 6-4-4 (22 points), remaining in third place.
The Lusitanos will look to strengthen their hold on first place when they return to action on Saturday against Icon FC in New Jersey. The Oceaneers will try to bounce back in two weeks when they host Icon FC at Tucker Field in Cumberland, R.I.
