Revenge may not have been on the menu, per se, but the Revolution’s USL affiliate exacted a little bit of lower-division payback over the Galaxy’s third-division squad on Friday.

Asani Samuels equalized in stoppage time, then scored the winner in extra time, allowing the Rochester Rhinos to claim the USL Championship with a 2-1 victory over LA Galaxy II at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y.

Los Dos opened the scoring with a strike from Ariel Lassiter in the 65th minute to give the guests a lead that would last as full time approached. But Samuels brought the Rhinos back from the brink when he tallied in the 92nd minute to send the title match to extra time before securing the decider in the 113th minute.

Providence College alum Marco Ugarte came on as a stoppage time sub to aid the Rhinos’ comeback.

The championship is the Rhinos’ first since 2001. Coincidentally, the final score was identical to the one seen in last year’s MLS Cup final between the Revolution and Galaxy.

During the 2015 season, the Revolution, which established its partnership with the Rhinos prior in 2013, loaned out midfielders Timi Mulgrew and Tyler Rudy.

Mulgrew played in 15 games, starting three of them, while accumulating 405 minutes worth of action. He did not record an offensive statistic.

Rudy played in 14 games, grabbing six starts and registering two assists. He racked up in 641 minutes of action before an ankle injury prematurely ended his season in August.

Following Friday’s title match, Rudy took to Twitter to congratulate his Rochester teammates.
