BC’s Impressive Run Ends

Senior goalkeeper Alex Kapp played his last game for the Eagles on Saturday.
Boston College Men’s soccer (11-8-2) NCAA tournament run came to an end in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 loss at Syracuse (16-5-3) on Sunday. The Orange had the better of the play for much of the game, but it took them until the 79th minute to find the breakthrough from junior forward Ben Polk to send them into the NCAA Semifinals.
The quarterfinal run matched the Eagles’ 2002 season for the deepest the team has advanced in the national tournament.
BC had advanced to the final eight after defeating University of Vermont 1-0 at home, and then heading on the road and getting a 2-1 over time victory over fourteen seed University of Southern Florida and a penalty kick win over third seeded Georgetown after a 1-1 draw. The Eagles were responsible for two of just seven upsets in this year’s tournament.
The Eagles had defeated Syracuse 2-1 at home in their regular season finale, but couldn’t find much offense on Saturday. Despite Syracuse outshooting BC 16 to 6 and 10 to 2 in shots on goal, Senior goalkeeper Alex Kapp kept the Eagles in the match until Polk headed in a Liam Callhan corner kick—the Orange’s 13th corner of the match—to give the home side their winner.
Kapp and senior defender Atobra Ampadu have played their last game for the Eagles, but otherwise a young Eagles side heavily reliant on freshman and sophomores should return all other starters from this year’s trip to the national tournament quarterfinals.
Among Syracuse’s starters was Freshman defender Miles Robinson, a native of Arlington, Mass., who played club soccer for FC Boston Bolts. Syracuse will face second seed Clemson in the semifinals on December 11th.
