Revs Re-Sign Stalwart Tierney

The more things change, the more they stay the same. No doubt that statement certainly rang true for Revolution left back Chris Tierney on Wednesday.

Following an All-Star caliber season, the 29-year-old left back was re-signed by the Revolution to a multi-year deal, ensuring that the team’s longest-tenured player will remain in Foxboro for the foreseeable future.

Although Tierney was already under contract for 2016, the extension keeps him from testing free agency, which he likely would’ve been eligible for following the end of next season.

“Chris has established himself as an integral part of this club and we are excited that he will continue to be so in the years ahead,” Revolution General Manager Michael Burns said in a club release on Wednesday. “Over the last eight years we have had the opportunity to watch Chris grow and develop into the player that he is today. His understanding of this club and what it means to represent the Revolution is unparalleled, which made the decision to re-sign him an easy one.”

Tierney, a native of Wellesley, Mass., originally joined the club as a supplemental draft pick in 2008. Since then, he’s gone on to play 186 regular season matches for the Revolution, ranking fifth in that department in the club’s record books. His 32 career assists are the fourth-highest haul in Revolution history.

He earned his first All-Star nomination in 2015, a year in which he played a career-high 31 games and collected a personal-best six assists.

Per league and club policy, terms of Tierney’s deal were not disclosed. His salary figure for 2015 was listed at $113,000 by the MLS Players Union.
