Sporting CP Update

SCP1

Sporting were kept off the board this week by Guimaraes, who played the Leoes to a 0-0 draw. Their best scoring chances came after the 75th minute when Guimaraes defender Josue was sent off after picking up a second yellow. Sporting peppered Guimaraes keeper Joao Miguel, but he held his own and had made every stop and intervention to prevent any goals.

One thing that certainly didn’t help Sporting in their battle against Guimaraes was the absence of their skipper, Adrien, who missed the match after picking up an injury last week in training.

Following wins by rivals Benfica and Porto, only four points now separate the top three teams, with Sporting’s lead over Benfica now at only a single point, just in time for the highly-anticipated Lisbon Derby on Saturday.

THE TABLE

1. Sporting 59 points
2. Benfica 58 points
3. Porto 55 points

ANOTHER DISASTER IN GERMANY

Adding to Sporting’s misery, they were eliminated from the Europa League last Thursday following a 3-1 loss away against Leverkusen (4-1 aggregate). This is the second straight occasion in which Sporting was eliminated from the Europa League by a German team. Last year, Wolfsburg eliminated Sporting 2-0, which came not long after the Leoes were eliminated from the Champions League group stage by Jermaine Jones’ former side, Schalke 04.

SPORTING B

The B team has been suffering from their own bad form lately, and that trend continued this weekend. They lost 1-0 to Olhanense.
