The Breakers found offense from a wide variety of sources in Sunday’s 7-0 preseason win over Northeastern University at Parsons Field in Brookline, Mass.

Sunday’s scrimmage – which pitted the Breakers against a Huskies side that collected 11 wins in 2015 – was divided into three periods in order to give new coach Matt Beard a better look at his charges.

“We scored goals and got into goal-scoring positions,” Beard said in a club release on Sunday, “and I think that’s important. I said to them before the game, we trained really well Saturday, and I think it was good preparation for today. It was about trusting each other and moving the ball.”

Trust and communication has been one of Beard’s primary talking points given the number of new faces in camp. And to the Breakers’ credit, they wasted no time displaying both as Kristie Mewis (12′) and Katie Schoepfer (30′) both collected goals during the first period.

“The pleasing thing was that we were trying things,” Beard said. “I know certain things didn’t come off, but in two weeks when they are fitter and sharper, they will come off.”

The second period saw Morgan Marlborough (38′), Julie King (42′) and Brittany Ratcliffe (52′) all score to widen the margin further.

The locals expanded their lead further in the third period with strikes from Rachel Wood (67′) and Elise Krieghoff (78′).

Swedish international Louise Schillgard was a force in the Breakers attack on an evening in which she collected three assists. Goalkeeper Jami Kranich, who backed up longtime starter Alyssa Naeher during the last two seasons, went the full 90.

“I was pleased,” Beard said. “This week was predominantly about fitness, and tonight was about getting minutes before we go away to Florida for two games.”

The Breakers will depart for Jacksonville, Fla. on Tuesday for an eight-day trip, and will play their next preseason match on Friday against Florida State in Tallahassee.
