Revs waive Sinovic

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution today announced the club has waived second-year defender Seth Sinovic. The move comes just hours after the team announced the signing of defender Otto Loewy.

Sinovic made 20 appearances – including 18 starts – last season while playing mostly as a left back, but seemingly fell out of favor for Chris Tierney and veteran Cory Gibbs, who is now with the Chicago Fire, despite his solid performances. The Leawood, Kansas native still saw his share of appearances in the starting XI as the defense was frequently plagued by injuries.

Heading into preseason Sinovic, taken in the second round (25th overall) in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft out of Creighton University, looked to be competing for a starting spot at left back with Chris Tierney until the Revs acquired French left back Didier Domi. Sinovic didn’t see any action in the Revs first two matches this season, but played the full 90 minutes in the Revs reserves 4-1 loss to D.C. on Saturday.

After the acquisition of Domi, Sinovic looked likely to be the understudy for the experienced veteran, especially when Sinovic earned a new contract shortly after the announcement of Domi’s signing in January. It was Tierney, a natural midfielder, however, who got the start on opening day with Domi out injured.

The 24-year-old had a successful college career at Creighton, where he scored eight goals and added 15 assists while appearing in 77 games and starting 66. He was a two-time All-Midwest Region honoree and lead Creighton to two Missouri Valley Conference titles in his time there.
