It was a different league but the same result for New England Mutiny striker Kate Howarth, who tallied twice in her team’s 3-0 win over the New York Magic in each side’s United Women’s Soccer (UWS) league debut match on Saturday in East Longmeadow, Mass.

Howarth, who was the Mutiny’s leading scorer last season while the team played in the WPSL, struck in the eighth and 31st minutes while newcomer Abby Sotomayor added one of her own in the 28th minute.

“The combination play we did up top today was really good,” Howarth told the media after the match. “We combined well. We did a couple of give-and-goes and found some openings and put some good shots on frame.”

Mutiny goalkeeper Anne-Marie Ulliac collected five saves to record the shutout.

New York’s best chance at goal came in the 90th minute when Gabriela Morales blasted a drive that smacked off the post.

Saturday’s match was proof positive that the Mutiny, who went 8-1-0 (24 points) and won their division in 2015, had no inclination of slowly easing their way into UWS competition.

“It just shows that we have great kids with great chemistry and good things happened,” Mutiny coach Joe Abele told the media after the match. The chemistry flowed through and as you could see, success was in the cards for this evening.”

With the win, the Mutiny open the season on three points (1-0-0) while the Magic will have to wait a little longer to get their first UWS points.

The Mutiny return to action on Saturday, May 22 against the on Lancaster Inferno at Pucillo Field in Millersville, Pa. Kickoff is set for 5:00pm.
