Another upset win wasn’t in the cards for Boston-based amateur side Southie FC on Wednesday after they fell 7-0 to the USL defending champion Rochester Rhinos in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup in Rochester, N.Y.

The Boys in Neon came out flying but were quickly put into an early deficit after Christian Volesky scored from the spot in the sixth minute.

It only got worse for Southie from there as Andre Fortune II (ninth minute), Marcos Ugarte (27th minute) and Asani Samuels (42nd, 44th, and 77th minutes) all joined Volesky on the scoresheet. A 48th minute own goal only added to Southie’s misery.

Rochester will face another USASA side – Lansdowne Bhoys out of Yonkers, N.Y. – in the third round on Jun. 1.

Wednesday’s Open Cup tie came one week after Southie pulled off a 2-0 first round upset victory over PDL side Seacoast United Phantoms. It was Southie’s first Open Cup match in club history.

Southie qualified for the historic tournament via the Open Division, which commenced last fall. Qualifying wins against Battery Park Gunners and GPS Omens paved the way for an automatic first round spot in the tournament proper after the third qualifying round was scrapped by U.S. Soccer earlier this year.

The Boys in Neon will re-focus their efforts on the Bay State Soccer League division 2 table, where they currently sit in third place three points behind the pace of polesitter Oneida Reserves.
