Player Ratings: New England Revolution at Vancouver Whitecaps

After each match the contributors to New England Soccer Today will rate the performances of the Revolution players who made an appearance on a 1 to 10 scale (1 horrendous, 5 average, 10 perfection). This week Brian O’Connell, Julian Cardillo and Sean Donahue contributed ratings for the Revs’ 1-1 draw with Vancouver.

Bobby Shuttleworth – Average Rating: 6.17 (Brian 6, Julian 6.5, Sean 6)
Performed well given the circumstances; communication a little shaky, but overall, had a very solid game. (Brian) … looked great setting up walls and organizing the defense on set pieces. Made a few nice saves. Outclassed on penalty kick. (Julian) … Saved the one shot he could and overall did a decent job organizing the defense. (Sean)

Didier Domi – Average Rating: 5.5 (Brian 5, Julian 6, Sean 5.5)
Made a few nice runs into the attacking third, but was a little slow to get back in the rear. (Brian) … Did a great job getting forward again, though his final ball was not there in the second half.  (Julian) … Continues to make runs forward, but his service in the final third was lacking. (Sean)

Ryan Cochrane – Average Rating: 5.33 (Brian 4.5, Julian 5.5, Sean 6)
A little sloppy in the early going, yellow card was undeserved. Had trouble containing Camilo. (Brian) … Had a few misclearances and got in the way of some defenders. But for the most part, read his opponents very well. (Julian) … Solid performance defensively. Limited Vancouver’s chances. (Sean)

A.J. Soares – Average Rating: 5.67 (Brian 6, Julian 6, Sean 5)
Red card completely undeserved; prior to dismissal, isolated the Atiba Harris and tidied up the box well. (Brian) … Looked the part of a veteran defender again. Unfortunate to be red carded, even though he should know better than to make such a risky tackle with a loose cannon referee such as Toledo. (Julian) … Red card may have been harsh, but tackle was completely unnecessary given the circumstances. Smart game until then, but needs to understand the situation better. (Sean)

Kevin Alston – Average Rating:  5.5 (Brian 5.5, Julian 5.5, Sean 5.5)
Good first half, but seemed to tail off a bit after the Revs took a two-man advantage in the second frame. (Brian) … Like Domi, the final pass wasn’t there in the second half. Didn’t see much of his speed in half 2, either. Not a bad performance, as he did a good job tracking back. (Julian) … Seemed to run out of ideas when he reaches the final third. Solid defensively. (Sean)

Stephen McCarthy – Average Rating:  5.17 (Brian 4.5, Julian 6, Sean 5)
Nearly put the Revs up in the 43rd minute before his header was cleared off the line, but he and Phelan were exposed on Vancouver’s counters. (Brian) … nfortunate to be subbed out. He nearly scored off a Bogg’s corner kick but his effort was cleared off the Uline. Did a great job getting the ball wide and into Shalrie Joseph’s feet. (Julian) … Nearly had his second goal of the season, but failed to make much of an impact otherwise before being subbed early in the second half. (Sean)

Shalrie Joseph – Average Rating: 5.5 (Brian 5.5, Julian 5.5, Sean 5.5)
As usual, passing, tackling, and attacking runs all there; could’ve done better to organize in the second half. (Brian) … Not the best game from the Revolution captain. Played predictable balls into the penalty area and shot too ambitiously. Still, when he played short passes he was dangerous. (Julian) … Needed to do a better job slowing down the game when the Revs were struggling to maintain possession. Too much of the burden lies on his shoulders in this young squad. (Sean)

Pat Phelan – Average Rating: 5.5 (Brian 4.5, Julian 6.5, Sean 5.5)
Not his greatest game; a few nice tackles, but was often overmatched on the Whitecaps attack. (Brian) … Did alot of the dirty work in midfield. Great job tracking back and filling in for Soares after the red card. His cross to find Zack Schilawski was precise. To me, he was the Revs’ MVP. (Julian) … Played one of the only good balls into the box the Revs had all night to set up the late equalizing goal. Struggled with the rest of the Revs midfield to stop Vancouvers quick counterattacks. (Sean)

Sainey Nyassi – Average Rating: 4.33 (Brian 4.5, Julian 4.5, Sean 4)
Created the bulk of the team’s attacking chances in the first half, but often times, outran the support. (Brian) … The speedster was kept quiet by the Whitecaps. Not much out of him at all. On occasion, did get past his defender and had a decent shot in the first half. But other than that, silent. (Julian) … Simply ineffective on the left side. Far too predictable if he can’t learn to cross with his left foot. (Sean)

Zak Boggs – Average Rating: 4.83 (Brian 5, Julian 5, Sean 4.5)
Energy there, as usual. Took corners pretty well; put in a tough spot when Alston briefly came off with bloody nose. (Brian) … Should know better than to put that much pressure on a player in the penalty area with a loose cannon referee. Good delivering corner kicks, but his other contributions on the night weren’t as solid. (Julian) … Worked hard, but service was poor from the run of play and mediocre on set pieces. Unlucky on the penalty call, but should’ve been smarter on the play. (Sean)

Zack Schilawski – Average Rating: 5 (Brian 4.5, Julian 6, Sean 4.5)
So-so game; Absent in first half, finally sprang to life in final 15 minutes; set up Stolica’s equalizer well. (Brian) … His assist showed that he may be young, but he certainly knows how to set a player up. Excellent read on Phelan’s cross. Still, not much out of Schilawski either. (Julian) … Invisible most of the match, but came up big to set up Stolica’s equalizer. (Sean)

(sub) Kenny Mansally – Average Rating: 3.83 (Brian 4.5, Julian 3, Sean 4)
Took on defenders, but much too hasty on many occasions. (Brian) … Poor decisions on shots, lost the ball too easily, did not make the most of chances he was given. (Julian) …  Tried to do too much at times in the attack and corners were poor. (Sean)

(sub) Ilija Stolica – Average Rating: 6.5 (Brian 7, Julian 6.5, Sean 6)
Just what the Revs were looking for; added teeth to the attack by getting into good positions; last-minute goal saves Revs. Literally became the game changer. (Brian) … It took Stolica a while to get in front of goal, but when he did, he put the ball into the back of the net twice. First goal offside, second one counted. The set up should be credited to Schilawski and Phelan, but Stolica was very calm on the put away. (Julian) …  Good finish for the equalizer and was dangerous going forward, but was caught offside far too many times. (Sean)

(sub) Chris Tierney – Average Rating: 5.83 (Brian 6.5, Julian 5, Sean 6)
Settled down his anxious teammates when he checked in at the 74th minute; nearly cracked the scoreline with an 82nd minute free kick that Nolly bravely denied. (Brian) … Was not able to link up with anyone via short passes. However, did have an excellent freekick and played in some dangerous crosses toward the end. (Julian) … Great cross to set-up Stolica’s offside goal and a solid free kick to test Nolly, but his corners were uncharacteristically poor and his inability to create space for himself made him ineffective when covered tightly. (Sean)
