Shuttleworth Traded to Minnesota for Femi

One of the Revolution’s longest-tenured players will no longer call Foxborough home as the club traded veteran goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to Minnesota United for former New England draft pick Femi Hollinger-Janzen.

Shuttleworth, who joined the Revolution in 2009, lost his starting spot during the second half of the 2016 season. In seven seasons with New England, the 29-year-old keeper collected 34 shutouts in 127 appearances. He posted a 46-53-28 regular season record and helped steer the club to the 2014 MLS Cup final.

“The entire New England Revolution organization thanks Bobby for his years of service,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns said in a club release. “We wish him well in the next phase of his career with Minnesota.”

After spending the first five years of his career as backup to Matt Reis, Shuttleworth took the starting goalkeeper reins in 2014, a year in which the Revolution reached the MLS Cup final.

But Shuttleworth struggled with consistency in 2016, and with the defense in a state of disarray during much of the season, understudy Brad Knighton took over the starting spot during the summer. When the club acquired Cody Cropper in August, the writing was on the wall.

Shuttleworth allowed 38 goals in 21 games, posting a 1.80 goals against average in his final season in New England.

While the Revolution say goodbye to Shuttleworth, they also welcome back a familiar face in Hollinger-Janzen, who was selected by New England in the fourth round of last year’s draft. The 23-year-old forward scored two goals and added an assist in 19 games for the Revolution last year.

Minnesota selected Hollinger-Janzen during the expansion draft after the Revolution left him unprotected.

“We are pleased to have Femi back on the roster for the 2017 season,” Burns said, “and look forward to welcoming him back to the club.”
