After putting together an impressive preseason camp, rookie defender Joshua Smith was signed by the Revolution on Wednesday.

Smith, 24, played in six of the team’s seven preseason matches, primarily featuring at center back. He was selected by New England in the fourth round of the 2017 SuperDraft following an impressive college career at University of San Francisco, where he made 71 appearances between 2012 and 2016.

At 6-4, 174 lbs., Smith was an imposing presence in the Revolution defense during preseason play. He tangled with Sporting Kansas City striker Dom Dwyer during a Feb. 22 preseason match, a sign the rookie center back wasn’t going to back off on a challenge from one of the league’s best strikers.

Smith will wear no. 27.

The addition of Smith brings the Revolution roster to 23 players.
