Angeli out for season

BOSTON, Mass. – Saturday’s season-opening 4-1 victory over the Atlanta Beat came with a heavy price for the Boston Breakers.

Midfielder Jordan Angeli, who suffered a knee injury in the 30th minute, will be sidelined for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury, the team announced on Tuesday.

“The team and I feel very badly for Jordan and the fact she has to deal with an operation and extended rehab,” said Head Coach Tony DiCicco. “Her play on the field has been outstanding all spring, and from the coaches’ view, she will be very hard to replace.”

Angeli, who secured the opening goal of the game in the 18th minute, looked ready to resume right where she left off after an impressive 2010 campaign that saw her score eight goals in her rookie season. Additionally, Angeli invigorated the Breakers’ form down the stretch as her impressive play helped lead the team to the WPS playoffs last season.

Despite her injury, DiCicco expects that his star midfielder’s influence will remain intact even though she won’t be able to help the team on the pitch.

“Jordan is a natural leader,” said DiCicco. “She will remain an important influence for the Breakers this season.”
