On Sunday, PGA golfer Sergio Garcia won The Masters to claim the first major tournament of his career. But not long ago, Garcia donned a Revolution training kit and kicked the soccer ball around with the first team.

Back in Aug. 2011, Garcia, an avid soccer fan, traded his golfing shoes for soccer boots and ran through an entire training session with the local XI while he was in the area for the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston in Norton.

“I felt good,” Gracia told the media after the session. “Obviously, they’re on a higher (level) because they practice every day, but I enjoyed it.”

Nicknamed El Nino, the Spanish golfer made a fan of one notable observer: then-Revolution coach Steve Nicol.

“I think he did well,” said Nicol. “He certainly didn’t look out of place and that tells you all you need to know.”

Nicol told reporters that Garcia went “straight into the mix” out on the Revolution’s training grounds.

“I tried my best and tried to play the way I always play,” said Garcia. “They seemed to be happy with what I did.”

Nearly six years later, the 37-year-old golfer did his best on a far larger stage and, suffice to say, he was happy with what he did.
