Boston City FC kicked off its second season in NPSL with an entertaining 1-1 draw to New York Cosmos B on Saturday at Malden Catholic High School in Malden, Mass.

The home support was greeted by Jhonata Batista’s goal inside of 12 minutes after the Lions midfielder took a pass from Nana Addai, turned, then uncorked a shot into the back of the Cosmos net.

But Christian Thierjung leveled it in the 18th minute after beating the offside trap and chipping it over keeper Victor Scariot.

“I think the nerves showed a little bit and 1-1 is not a terrible result against the Cosmos but I don’t care which team, we play I think we have a good enough squad to beat anyone,” Boston City captain Ronaldo Vieira told the media after the match. “It was one slip, one lapse in concentration that let them back in the game.”

Both squads squandered chances to pocket maximum points. Boston City’s Paulo Henrique and Homero Morais both smacked the woodwork while New York’s Jesus Alvarez and Matias Ruiz both fired shots that prompted Scariot into action.

Saturday’s clash was a rematch of last year’s season opener, a game which Cosmos B emerged as the victor with a 2-1 win.

Boston City will return to action on Saturday, May 6 at New York Athletic Club in New Rochelle, N.Y. Kickoff is 2:00pm.
