The Breakers offense went silent on Sunday as they were edged by the North Carolina Courage 1-0 at Jordan Field in Allston, Mass.

Jessica McDonald’s 32nd minute goal proved to be the difference while goalkeeper Abby Smith’s team record clean sheet streak in NWSL play was snapped at 254 minutes. The Breakers were held to a pair of shots on goal.

“It was frustrating,” Breakers coach Matt Beard told the media after the match. “Because as the game went on, we started to go a little bit longer when we could’ve played and the final cross wasn’t good enough and that was the story of the game for us.”

Boston’s best chance for a breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Adriana Leon fired a shot that briefly escaped the grasp of Courage keeper Sabrina D’Angelo. Rose Lavelle and Natasha Dowe also put D’Angelo on notice, but neither was able to convert.

With the loss, the Breakers fell to 2-2-0 (six points) while the Courage stayed undefeated with a mark of 4-0-0 (12 points).

“Obviously they’re a tough team to play against,” Beard said. “They’re resilient. They’re athletic. It was a tough night with the conditions, both teams having to deal the wind. It was tough.”

The Breakers will look to rebound on the road against the Chicago Red Stars on Sunday, May 14. Kickoff is set for 6:00pm ET.
