The New England Mutiny’s postseason hopes took a significant hit on Saturday after they were edged 1-0 by New Jersey Copa FC in Holmdel, N.J.

Reigning UWS Player of the Year Krystyna Freda scored the goal that sank the Mutiny in 22nd minute while former New England goalkeeper Kristyn Shea notched the clean sheet for Copa.

The guests’ best chance at finding the back of the net came only four minutes after Freda’s breakthrough. Mutiny striker Kate Howarth eluded the Copa defense and went 1 v 1 with Shea, but Howarth sent her blast screaming over the bar.

With the loss, the Mutiny fell to 5-3-0, and sit in third place in the UWS East Conference with 15 points. They’ll likely need maximum points from their final two matches to stay in the playoff picture with the top two teams in the east advancing to the conference final on Jul. 18.

New England returns to action on Sunday when they host the New York Magic at East Longmeadow High School in East Longmeadow, Mass. Kickoff is 3:00pm.

Earlier this season, the Mutiny beat the Magic 1-0 in New York on the back of a late Lauren Aldrich goal.
