Onyewu: Revs Passed On Signing Me

It won’t go down as Oguchi Onyewu’s most memorable match by any means, but Sunday’s 3-0 victory over the Revolution certainly tasted sweet to the Union defender.

Following his 90-minute shift at center back, the 35-year-old former U.S. International took a dig at the Revolution, which was one of a few clubs that took brought Onyewu in for a trial last year but let him walk before he signed with the Union during the winter.

“The Revs took a pass on me too,” Onyewu told the media after the match. “I think they might be going back on that decision now.”

No doubt Sunday’s three-goal effort exposed the Revolution backline, which was missing two starters. Additionally, New England entered the match with six open roster spots.

When asked why he believes the Revolution organization did not sign him following his trial in August 2016, Onyewu said he believes it was due to his recent inability to stay healthy.

“I think it had to do with my age and perhaps my past injuries,” Onyewu said. “There are not a lot of players that have sustained a lengthy career, like I’ve had, that haven’t had injuries to their names.”

Onyewu, who’s started 14 games for the Union this season, cited Orlando City’s Kaka as such an example. The Brazilian midfielder has missed a significant portion of time this season due to a hamstring injury.

While Sunday’s win might have been personally satisfying for the veteran center back, it’s clear he has no regrets, and seems happy with how it all turned out.

“I don’t let adversity get in the way, I push through it,” Onyewu said. “I’m continuing to that with this team behind me and hopefully we all continue to that the rest of the season.”
