U.S. Suffers Disastrous Defeat

The United States suffered a disastrous home defeat in Friday’s shock 2-0 loss to Costa Rica in a critical World Cup Qualifier at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.

Marcos Urena put the U.S. in the hole thanks to a 30th minute strike before closing the door on the Americans with an 82nd minute goal.

The loss kept the U.S. on eight points in standings, stuck in third place within only point above fourth-place Panama.

Costa Rica’s victory was their first win on U.S. soil since 1985.

Attleboro’s Geoff Cameron started at center back alongside Tim Ream, who was unable to thwart Urena’s first goal, which came from a low drive from inside the 18.

Former Revolution star Clint Dempsey was curiously kept on the bench to start in favor of Bobby Wood. Dempsey entered the game in the 65th minute.

The U.S. will attempt to bounce back on Tuesday at Honduras.
