The Weekend Update

On Thurday, the Boston Aztec took one more step toward a return to the WPSL title game with a 4-0 win over the similarly-monikered Boston Aztec U-23 squad in the WPSL regional playoffs. The win delivers the Aztec to the WPSL semifinals for the second year in a row, as the 2010 WPSL champions will face off against the Orange County Waves in Chicago on Saturday, July 30th.

On Friday, the Western Mass Pioneer and Vermont Voltage opened the penultimate weekend of PDL action with a 1-1 draw in Saint Albans, VT. Ryan Malone gave the Pioneers a lead in the 49th minute, but Jonathan Glenn’s equalizer in the 63rd minute saved the Voltage from a home loss.

On Saturday, the Pioneers were pummeled by MPS Portland Phoenix by the a 5-0 scoreline in Scarborough, ME. Jason Massie (21′, 39′)scored a pair of goals, while Joel Thiessen (5′), Andrew Rigby (26′), and Nicholas Weightman (87′) all chipped in to give Portland the comprehensive victory.

A day later, the Portland well was dry, as New Hampshire Phantoms blanked them in Portsmouth, NH. Robbie McLarney scored the decider in the 52nd minute in a caution-filled match (seven total yellow cards issued).
