Aztec Joins Breakers in WPSL Elite

Only weeks ago, it appeared that area fans of women’s soccer would be without a team to cheer for in 2012.

Now, they’ll have a choice between two.

On Tuesday, Aztec MA (formerly Boston Aztec) announced that it will join the newly-formed WPSL Elite League. Although the team is the latest team to join the Elite League, it is, by no means, a stranger to WPSL.

“We have been in the WPSL for seven years, so we have a lot of experience,” said Aztec MA President Mike Kersker in a statement. released by the league. “We started at the bottom and we have worked our way up to the top now.”

Aztec MA are the second Boston-area team to join the league after the Boston Breakers joined last week. The Breakers were temporarily without a league to play in after WPS suspended operations for the 2012 season.

Aztec MA, who won the WPSL National Championship as Boston Aztec in 2010, were affiliated with the Breakers in 2010 and 2011. The Boston Aztec Reserves served as a feeder club for the Breakers, with Ashley Phillips, Katie Schoepfer, Taryn Hemmings and Liz Bogus among the former Aztec players who suited up for the Breakers.

The Beverly-based club are the sixth team join WPSL Elite. In addition to them and the Breakers, Western New York Flash, Chicago Red Stars, ASA Chesapeake Charge and Indiana FC have all joined in the last week. The league is expected field between 8-10 teams, with the regular season likely to run from late-April through August.

Endicott College has served as the Aztec home field for the last two seasons. More details surrounding the team’s addition to the Elite League will be forthcoming, per the team’s official Facebook page.
