Nguyen Picked Up by Revs

Former U.S. National Team youth star Lee Nguyen was selected by the Revolution in Waiver Draft, the team announced on Friday.

Nguyen, who played for the U.S. U-20s in the 2005 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in the Netherlands, also has three caps on the senior level. The 25-year-old winger/forward signed with MLS in December and was selected by Vancouver via lottery, but was waived by the Whitecaps on Thursday prior to the MLS roster compliance deadline.

“Lee gives us added versatility in the attack,” General Manager Michael Burns said in a statement. “He is an effective player on either wing or up top, and he has great potential in MLS.”

Prior to signing with the league, Nguyen featured in the Vietnamese V-League for Hoang Anh Gia in 2009 before moving on to Becamex Binh Duong FC, where played from 2010-11. In 29 total appearances in the V-League, he scored 14 goals while playing as an outside midfielder and forward.

He originally signed with PSV Eindhoven after a stellar freshman season at Indiana, where he scored five goals and collected 12 assists. After playing with the reserves and first team for two years, Nguyen joined Randers FC (Danish Superliga) in 2008, where featured in 23 games.

The McKinney, Tex. native will be formally added to the roster once he receives his International Transfer Certificate, and will occupy one of the team’s senior roster spots. Per club and league policy, details of his contract were not disclosed.

The addition of Nguyen leaves three open roster spots still up for grabs going into Saturday’s FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup championship game.
