The New England Mutiny welcomed back another familiar face on Friday as it prepares for the inaugural WPSL Elite League season.

Tony Horta, who coached the club from 2007 through 2009, was named head coach only days after one of his former players – Kristin Shaw – was appointed as Mutiny general manager.

“I am very excited to welcome Tony Horta back to the Mutiny family,” said Shaw in a statement. “Tony is an outstanding coach and a fantastic addition to the organization. He has been successful at every stop during his career, including leading the New England Mutiny to two straight WPSL National Championship appearances.”

Horta compiled a 25-11-3 record in his three season with the Mutiny. In his first year at the helm, he led the Mutiny to the WPSL National Championship game before it fell to current Elite League club FC Indiana. For his efforts, he was named WPSL East Coach Of The Year in 2007.

One of the first orders of business for Horta will be overseeing the club’s Mar. 10 tryout at American International College. And although the 2012 schedule has not been announced, Horta won’t have much time getting the Mutiny ready to face a higher level of competiton in the newly-formed Elite League.

Although the transition won’t make things easier, Shaw has every reason to believe that her former head coach will incorporate a winning philosophy as the Mutiny get set for the 2012 season.

“His proven track record as a leader speaks volumes,” Shaw said. “I am confident he will guide the Mutiny in a positive direction.”
