In a battle of undefeateds, Michele Weissenhofer’s 34th minute strike gave the edge to the Red Stars (3-0-0, 9 points), who handed a 1-0 loss to the Breakers (5-1-0, 15 points) on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Chicago keeper Jamie Forbes allowed Weissenhofer’s goal to hold by making eight saves. Her counterpart, Alice Binns, stopped seven on the evening.<\/p>\n
“Having just played the other night (Friday) and five games this season,” Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole said in a post-game release. “We were a little bit tired. It was a tough game.”<\/p>\n
Making matters tough for the Breakers was none other than Forbes, who denied an Elli Reed shot in the 12th minute. Forbes followed up with another crucial save in the 30th minute when she stopped a Bianca D’Agosinto look inside the box.<\/p>\n
Forbes heroics opened the door for Weissenhofer in the 34th minute. Lori Chalupny put a shot on frame that Weissenhofer deflected through to put the hosts on the board.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had an opportunity to score that I should have put in about 30 seconds prior to the actual goal,\u201d Weissenhofer told chicagoredstars.net. \u201cI was still in the goal area after the missed shot, then Lori got a piece of the ball on target that ricocheted back to me and I was able to put it in.\u201d<\/p>\n
Forbes continued her torrid form in the second frame when she stopped current league goalscoring leader – Katie Schoepfer – ten minutes apart in the 51st and 61st minutes.<\/p>\n
But no matter what the Breakers threw at Forbes, nothing fell through as the Red Stars’ keeper collected her third shutout of the season.<\/p>\n
“I think we\u2019ll be fine,” Cole said. “We just have to get off to a good start. But credit to Chicago. They are a good team. We have to be better, but I\u2019m not overly disappointed or worried about our play.”<\/p>\n
