Boston University midfielder Michael Bustamante, a late addition to\u00a0last week’s\u00a0MLS\u00a0Combine, was among seven local prospects\u00a0selected in Tuesday’s MLS Supplemental Draft.<\/p>\n
Bustamante was picked by 13th overall by the New York Red Bulls. Connecticut defender Jossimar Sanchez (New England – fourth overall), Harvard forward Brian Rogers (Vancouver – 29th overall), Providence midfielder\/forward Marc Cintron (New York – 34th overall), Connecticut midfielder Stephane Diop (New York – 51st overall), Sacred Heart defender Marcello Castro (Colorado – 63rd overall) and Connecticut defender Max Wasserman (Real Salt Lake – 69th overall) also had their names called on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Despite\u00a0a late invitation to the Combine, Bustamante dazzled as an outside back during the trio of scrimmages. A number of draft experts tabbed\u00a0the Terrier\u00a0as\u00a0a likely SuperDraft selection. Last year, he became the first Terrier to earn\u00a0 America East All-Conference First Team honors\u00a0four times.\u00a0In 69 career games, he scored nine goals and recorded 27 assists.<\/p>\n
Sanchez played in 74 games for the Huskies. He scored two goals and added an assist and wore the captain’s armband in his junior and seniors seasons – both of which saw UConn advance to the\u00a0NCAA quarterfinals.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Rogers was limited by injuries during his final two seasons at Harvard, but scored a total of\u00a011 goals in his first two seasons. He earned Ivy League \u00a0Rookie of the Year Honors in 2009.<\/p>\n
Cintron scored a goal and added an assist in 12 games for the Friars in 2012. He was named to the MAC Herman Trophy Watch List prior to the season.<\/p>\n
Diop tallied two goals and racked up three assists in 18 games for the Huskies.\u00a0He finished his career with 16 goals and 16 assists for 48 points in 82 games.<\/p>\n
Castro led the Pioneers with nine goals in 2012, despite playing the bulk of\u00a0his senior season\u00a0as a central defender. His 23 career goals is the fifth-most in school history.<\/p>\n
Wasserman appeared in 71 games,\u00a0scoring six goals and adding\u00a012 assists in his four seasons with the Huskies.\u00a0In 2012, he scored\u00a0two goals and added six assists, including a game-winning free kick in overtime against Washington on Sept. 7.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
