The New England Revolution bolstered its roster depth on Wednesday by signing\u00a0midfielder\u00a0Donnie Smith and goalkeeper Luis Soffner.<\/p>\n
Smith (21st overall) and Soffner (36th overall)\u00a0were both selected in the second round of the 2013 SuperDraft, and were in camp with the club for the duration of the preseason. Terms of\u00a0the deals were not disclosed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re pleased to bring Donnie and Luis into the team,\u201d Revolution General Manager Michael Burns said in a statement. \u201cDonnie has a unique combination of tremendous speed and wide play on the left side, while Luis was one of college soccer\u2019s top goalkeepers the last few seasons. Both players did well during preseason training and we\u2019re looking forward to seeing them develop in our system.\u201d<\/p>\n
Smith played in six preseason games, and recorded an assist in the Revolution’s 3-1 win over the Red Bulls on Feb. 16. He featured primarily at left sided midfielder, but can also play left back, if needed. He will wear number 33 after wearing number 46 during the preseason.<\/p>\n
Soffner played in two preseason games, and earned the win in a closed door 4-1 scrimmage victory over Phoenix FC (USL-PRO)\u00a0on Feb. 18. With Bobby Shuttleworth and Matt Reis battling for the top goalkeeper spot, Soffner heads into the season as the third string keeper. He will wear number 36 and figures to be a candidate for a spot in\u00a0Rochester once their preseason opens in April.<\/p>\n
Wednesday’s signings give the Revolution three signed selections – including first\u00a0overall pick and Generation adidas prospect Andrew Farrell -from last month’s SuperDraft.<\/p>\n
With the additions of Smith and Soffner, the Revolution’s roster stands at 28 players, two below the 30-player maxium.<\/p>\n
