FOXBOROUGH, Mass. \u2013\u00a0It’s not a reach to say that the\u00a0Revolution\u00a0are\u00a0probably going to\u00a0focus on honing the attack during the next two weeks of training.<\/p>\n

But according to midfielder\/forward Ryan Guy, nothing\u00a0sharpens the\u00a0form better than game action.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s only so much you can do on the training pitch,\u201d Guy said after Saturday\u2019s game. \u201cOnce you get on the field, especially against high-level opposition, it does change things a little bit and your chemistry is tested. I think that\u2019s what\u2019s going on: we\u2019re going through a feeling out period of one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the last four games, the Revolution have used five different central midfielders, and three different outside winger sets. Some of the changes are due to injuries, while others are due to specific matchups. But both have conspired to keep Heaps from fielding a consistent lineup, or formation, for that matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely,\u201d Guy said. \u201cA lot of us have talked about (finding a preferred formation). I think once we get that formation settled, and we probably will, we\u2019re a team where we have so much depth that we\u2019ll probably have a couple of formations.\u201d<\/p>\n

So far, Jay Heaps has used the 4-2-3-1, but with subtle tweaks in\u00a0each of the team’s\u00a0first four games. While Saturday\u2019s formation resembled a 4-4-2, Guy said his role wasn\u2019t as\u00a0cut and dried as it appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis one was a little strange because (my position) really wasn\u2019t a striker position,\u201d Guy said. \u201cIt was more of a center midfield position\u00a0(but) it wasn\u2019t quite working the way we had hoped.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guy admitted that it took the team \u201ca good 40-45 minutes\u201d to get used to the intricacies of the formation used on Saturday, even though they’d practiced it on the training pitch. He said that much of the\u00a0team’s success within that alignment rested on his familiarity with Juan Toja, and that there were some obvious growing pains.<\/p>\n

But even so, the third-year Revolution\u00a0veteran believes that even though the club\u2019s only scored one goal through its first four, it\u2019s just a matter of time before it all comes together.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce we get comfortable with those couple formations, it\u2019s going to be very hard to defend,\u201d Guy said. \u201cI just think unfortunately, some of these things take time. The more we\u2019re going to play, I think the better it\u2019s going to look, the better it\u2019s going to feel and I think the easier it\u2019s going to come and the result of all those things is goals.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
