Connecticut Soccer League squad\u00a0Newtown Pride SC outlasted New York Pancyprian Freedoms\u00a0in a 0-0 (7-6 PKs) win in Sunday’s U.S. Open Cup USASA Region 1 Quarterfinal replay at Newtown High School.<\/p>\n
The win served as vindication for Newtown, who originally lost to New York 1-0 in an Apr. 7th USASA Region 1 Quarterfinal. After it was discovered that New York fielded an ineligible player during the contest, the USASA ruled that the Cosmopolitan League side was to forfeit the win.<\/p>\n
However, New York appealed the ruling, advising that their league had\u00a0erroneously advised team\u00a0officials that the player in question – Andreas\u00a0Chronis –\u00a0was eligible for Cup play even as he served a lengthy suspension in league play. New York won their appeal, and thus, the teams were notified by USASA that the Quarterfinal would be replayed on Sunday.<\/p>\n
With the win, Newtown\u00a0advances to play\u00a0Mass Premier Soccer (Bay State Soccer League) on Apr. 28 at a location and time to be determined.<\/p>\n
