The New England Mutiny were crowned East Conference champs and earned a trip to the WPSL quarterfinals in the wake of a 3-2 overtime win over the ASA Chesapeake Charge. (Photo: wpsl.info)<\/p><\/div>\n

The New England Mutiny (8-0-5)\u00a0booked their tickets to the WPSL Semifinals as a 3-2 overtime win against the ASA Chesapeake\u00a0Charge (10-1-2) on Saturday allowed them to claim the East Conference crown.<\/p>\n

Lauren Reilly’s 90+3 minute goal sent the game to overtime, where Morgan Andrews scored the game-winner in the 100th minute. Shauna Edwards\u00a0kicked off the scoring for New England in the\u00a022nd minute.<\/p>\n

The Charge opened the account with a 12th minute Cheyenne Skidmore strike,\u00a0then benefited from a Mutiny\u00a0own goal in the 53rd minute.<\/p>\n

On a muggy night in central Maryland, the hometown Charge wasted little time putting themselves in command. Inside of 12 minutes, Alex Prior-Brown\u00a0sent one past\u00a0Niki Deiter, but defender Allie Fitzsimmons cleared it away. Undeterred,\u00a0Prior-Brown\u00a0grabbed it back, then\u00a0crossed it to Skidmore, who slotted it through.<\/p>\n

The Mutiny responded ten minutes later when Edwards sent a shot that nicked the post before it fell through to put the match on level terms in the 22nd minute.<\/p>\n

It stayed at one apiece until the early moments of the second half, when the Mutiny defense couldn’t\u00a0handle a\u00a0Laura Kane\u00a0ball inside the area\u00a0before it inadvertently fell into their own net in the 53rd minute.<\/p>\n

Lightning delayed the match near the 78th minute, and with 20 minutes to ponder their situation, the Mutiny knew they’d have to start sending numbers in front before it became too late.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a090+3 minute, the Mutiny pressed forward desperate to find an equalizer with the clock – not to mention their season – set to expire. But the guests were far from finished, thanks to an Andrews free kick that banged the post, then caromed off Reilly’s face and through to send the Mutiny and Charge into overtime.<\/p>\n

Andrews found herself in the spotlight yet again in\u00a0overtime\u00a0when she capitalized of a poor clearance near the Charge net and punched it in at the century mark.<\/p>\n

With the win, the Mutiny will travel to Sacramento for the\u00a0semifinals on Jul. 27. It is their first trip to the quarterfinals since 2008, and their sixth visit to the WPSL National Championship weekend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
