According to multiple reports, former New England Revolution assistant coach Paul Mariner\u00a0will\u00a0be named technical director<\/del>\u00a0director of player development\u00a0at Toronto FC. Mariner’s name\u00a0was\u00a0originally linked to the head coaching position in Toronto until Aron Winter recently surfaced as the new favorite to take the coaching reins.<\/p>\n

Recent reports also\u00a0indicate that Winter will, in fact,\u00a0take over as head coach in Toronto, and\u00a0will be working closely with Mariner and recently-hired consultant Jurgen Klinsmann, the former Germany coach\u00a0who’s been\u00a0perpetually linked\u00a0to the U.S. Men’s National Team head coaching post.<\/p>\n

Mariner,\u00a0a highly-respected member of the Revolution coaching staff\u00a0during his time in Foxboro, most recently served as the head coach of Plymouth Argyle F.C. in England\u2019s Football League One (third division). However, both\u00a0Mariner announced last\u00a0Thursday that he and Plymouth were parting ways.<\/p>\n

The former\u00a0English striker\u00a0joined\u00a0New England\u00a0as an assistant under head coach Steve Nicol in 2004 until his departure for Plymouth Argyle\u00a0prior to the conclusion of the\u00a02009 season. During Mariner\u2019s tenure, the\u00a0Revs reached three straight MLS Cup finals (2005-2007) and won the U.S. Open Cup in 2007 and SuperLiga in 2008.<\/p>\n

Mariner\u00a0has been\u00a0widely credited with the development of the Revolution\u2019s strikers, including all-time leading scorer Taylor Twellman. Twellman revealed in his retirement press conference in November\u00a0that Mariner’s hiring in 2004\u00a0was\u00a0\u201cthe best thing that Steve Nicol ever did for me.\u201d Mariner, now 57-years-old,\u00a0enjoyed a lengthy and successful\u00a0career as a player, most notably with Plymouth Argyle, Ipswich Town, and Arsenal. He also scored 13 goals in 35 appearances for England.<\/p>\n

Should\u00a0he\u00a0accept the technical director’s<\/del>\u00a0director of player development’s\u00a0responsibilities in Toronto, Mariner will be\u00a0given the monumental task of overhauling\u00a0a\u00a0club has\u00a0failed to reach\u00a0the\u00a0postseason since entering the league in 2006.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
