Another familiar face joined the New England Revolution roster after the club re-signed midfielder Donnie Smith on Monday.

Smith, 23, made his MLS debut during the 2013 season opener, but injuries prevented the 2013 SuperDraft selection from making further contributions. The club declined his option for 2014 before bringing him back less than two weeks prior to the start of preseason camp.

“We’re pleased to bring Donnie back this season,” Revolution general manager Michael Burns said in a team release on Monday. “He’s a young player with great speed, and as a left-footed player, he’s also very versatile. We’re looking forward to seeing him develop further this year.”

The former UNC-Charlotte midfielder was selected by the Revolution in the second round (21st overall) of the 2013 SuperDraft. He made a strong showing during the preseason, and was subsequently signed prior to First Kick.

A left-footed player, Smith can play as a wide midfielder or at left back.

Smith is the second player the Revolution re-signed after declining his option. Goalkeeper Luis Soffner saw his option declined in November before he was re-signed by the clun in December.

With Smith back on board, the Revolution roster stands at 22. Preseason training is set to kick off on Jan. 25 in Foxborough, Mass.
